New Design Offerings from Gerald & Joan

Blue skies. When I launched Gerald & Joan in January, the focus was strictly on graphic design, event planning, event styling and handmade goods. These are my passions, so it felt natural to build my company around them.

However, after seven years in the communications world, I quickly realized that it is hard to turn off those skills that have been a part of my career for so long. It's also hard to shun that very expensive piece of paper that reads Bachelor of Arts in Print Journalism and Public Relations....so, instead of putting the PR, copywriting, social media, blogging and email marketing that I once did for a living on the back burner, I decided to embrace them. After all, the essence of Gerald & Joan is storytelling, and communications work is storytelling. From that angle, it makes perfect sense that it should be a piece of the larger Gerald & Joan puzzle.

The charitable partnerships piece fits into Gerald & Joan because I would be working for a charity if I wasn't living this dream. I began volunteering in high school, and I worked with charities for the majority of my career. Those experiences taught me everything that I know today and continue to be a huge part of who I am. Whether it’s matching a business to a charity or assisting a charity in the areas of writing, branding and design, I want to support nonprofit work and assist them as they build their brands and tell their stories.

So far this year has been a glorious whirlwind of inspiration and excitement. I'm excited to take this next step and share these new offerings.

Thank you, dear family and friends, for your constant love and support and for being such an integral part of the Gerald & Joan journey. Let me know if I can help you in some way!

Recent Design Sneak Peek

What is more classic for a summer wedding than navy and white? For this wedding that is taking place by the beach, the bride envisioned a very traditional and timeless look for her invitation suite. We started by discussing her favorite motifs, and she listed crabs, stripes, chevrons and a monogram among her preferences. After creating some mockup designs of each motif, she selected a circle monogram and chevron print. The final wedding suite will include flat invitations, reception cards, RSVP postcards, navy envelopes and custom navy and white chevron liners.

Below is a mood board of some of the designs that were featured in the suite. We'll share images of the finished suite very soon! classicchevronsmoodboard

Introducing...Lifestyle

Gerald & Joan began as a passion project and has grown into a full-time dream career for me. The original goal was to offer products and experiences that tell stories and preserve the past while honoring the present and future. That idea resulted in Gerald & Joan Design, and then earlier this week, we officially launched the second facet of the Gerald & Joan philosophy -- Lifestyle. If you've followed this blog for long, then you know the Lifestyle brand is a natural extension of our original idea. Food, travel, vintage heirlooms, family -- all of these things connect us with our own heritage and make life feel meaningful and special. For this very reason, they have become regular blog features and regularly inspire our design work. In time, we hope to grow the blog to include contributing writers' thoughts on the same topics along with some new ones, but until then, we thank you for reading along and being a part of this amazing journey. We are so glad you're a part of our story.

On the Road with G&J: Charleston

img_2224.jpg

Today's On the Road visual vacation comes courtesy of a Memorial Day weekend trip that Jonathan and I took way back in 2009. Although we only had two days in Charleston, Jonathan and I loved it and vowed we'd go back someday. If we were to hop on a plane and head there today, here's where we'd go: 1. Blue Bicycle Books - We love bookstores, especially quirky ones that carry a variety of new, used and rare books. Blue Bicycle's shelves were packed with a great selection of old books, and it reminded us a little of our all-time favorite bookstore, Square Books. Plus, we loved the name.

2. Taco Boy and Folly Beach - It's Charleston so you're supposed to eat low country fare, right? Yes, but when we're on vacation, we like to eat Mexican food and go to the beach! We took a cab ride to Folly Beach where we discovered Taco Boy's utterly delicious margaritas and nachos. Although we were only there a few hours, I still dream about Folly Beach and Taco Boy. Rita's on Folly is another Folly Beach restaurant I want to visit as well.

3. Walking Tours - We didn't rent a car, but we stayed in the heart of downtown and enjoyed walking around the area. There are so many beautiful old homes, churches and historic buildings that we were grateful to be able to take everything in on foot. We were also happy to have comfortable sandals, minimal rain and not-too-hot temperatures. Walking around Charleston in the summer or fall wouldn't be quite as pleasant. Along with the typical touristy brochures and guidebooks, Diana Hollingsworth Gessler's Very Charleston: A Celebration of History, Culture and Lowcountry Charm (that I found at Blue Bicycle Books) served as our guide.

4. Museums - Because of our short stay, we didn't get to visit any of the house museums or the museum at Fort Sumter. Fort Sumter is a must as it played such a huge part in U.S. history, but the historic homes and the stories about the families who lived in them are what really interests us. If the exteriors and gardens were any indication of what's inside the homes, we'll be in heaven. I also want to spend time at the Historic Charleston City Market.

5. Off the beaten path - One of our favorite parts of exploring a new city is to take a drive without an agenda. Walking tours and Prius cab rides (we had our first in Charleston) were great but will only get you so far. We look forward to discovering lots of lowcountry gems on our next trip!
