Summer Light

nyc-ms-tn-050.jpg

Have you ever noticed that the light looks different in the summertime? It's more inviting...and almost lures us out to play. Back on Mackinac Island in Michigan, there are so many reasons to get outside and soak up the carefree days of July. You can visit the ice cream shop, take a bike ride, walk along the lake and enjoy all of the lovely historic homes. The yellow, blue and turquoise homes with their crisp white trim look dreamy year round, but in that summer light they belong on a postcard or in a painting.

Now how about that bike ride? We could stop for a hotdog or ice cream....

American Summer

These images, which were taken by my dad all around our great country, epitomize everything that is great about summertime in America. They conjure up thoughts of apple pie, white picket fences, lightning bugs and freshly sliced watermelon. With the Fourth of July just around the corner, we hope they will remind you to stop and remember all of the little things that make an American summer so special. We know it's easy to forget about the joys of summer when you're toiling away at work! Need more American summer inspiration? On the Road to Mackinac Island, Michigan

michigan-239.jpg

Today we're on the road to Mackinac Island off the coast of Michigan. This quaint, eight mile island became a popular summer colony and tourist destination in the late 19th century. Many of the homes and buildings have been preserved and restored, and the entire island has been deemed a National Historic Landmark. In addition to the wide variety of architectural styles, the island hosts numerous cultural events and is well-known for its delicious fudge and ban on motor vehicles. Since 1898, only snow mobiles, service vehicles and emergency vehicles have been allowed on the island. The rest of the island's guests and inhabitants arrive by ferry or boat and get around on foot, bicycle or horse-drawn carriage.

How's that for quaint?

On the Road: Snapshots from Rhode Island

tulips.jpg

In keeping with our beach vibe we've established on the blog recently, today we're sharing some photos from my dad's recent trip to Rhode Island. We personally love the quirky details (and colors) mixed with the classic New England nautical designs. While we haven't visited Rhode Island, we can tell the smallest state in the Union has plenty of personality all of its own and is well worth a visit! We're envisioning a long weekend spent peddling around quaint villages on Schwinn bicycles, searching for classic Americana pieces at dusty antique stores, indulging in freshly caught fish dinners and turning in at some sweet bed and breakfast.

Sounds like a pretty fun trip.
